Vinyl vs Concrete Fencing: What the Brochures Won't Show You
Vinyl is sold as “maintenance free forever”. Concrete is sold as “permanent but pricey”. We let our customers' photos tell the real story, so you can decide with your eyes open.
Customer Reviews
“Looks stunning. Started punctual on the agreed date and completed it within the timeframe specified. Fence straight, plumb, banter of the street - happy I went the stacked stone!”
Mark Bradley
“Greg was amazing to deal with, nothing was too much trouble. I have a fabulous fence that I will have for many, many years. I have no hesitation in recommending Greg or his excellent business.”
Kym Hudson
“This Wall concept is amazing. I could not believe how fast our fence went up! Greg and his team did a great job negotiating our steep sloping block. The end result exceeded our expectation, we even added a secure parcel post box. We have now painted the wall which looks even better. I am confident the investment is reflected in our increased property value.”

Vinyl (PVC) fencing has grown fast, and the marketing is persuasive. But after decades installing boundary walls across Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast, we keep getting called out to replace vinyl fences that did not live up to the promise. Here is the honest comparison, including the parts the brochures leave out.
The vinyl promise vs the vinyl reality
| Feature | What the brochure says | What actually happens |
|---|---|---|
| Maintenance | "Never needs painting" | Goes green in shaded spots within months. The sheen fades, the surface turns porous, and many owners end up painting it anyway. |
| Durability | "Lifetime warranty" | Becomes brittle in the Queensland sun. Storm damage is common. We have seen vinyl fences held together with rope. |
| Appearance | "Looks like new for decades" | Fades, yellows and looks dull within a few years, and you cannot restore the original colour. |
A real customer story: from vinyl to concrete
One client replaced an old timber fence with a brand new vinyl fence. Less than a year later, before it had even started to fade, a severe storm wrecked it. They were left holding the broken panels together with rope while they waited for a real solution. They called us, and we installed a Superior Concrete Wall in the same spot.

Honest comparison: vinyl vs Superior Concrete Walls
Here is how the two stack up on the things that actually matter over the life of a fence.
| Factor | Vinyl (PVC) | Superior Concrete Walls |
|---|---|---|
| Lifespan | 10 to 20 years, often less in QLD sun | 50 to 100+ years |
| Upfront cost (installed) | Around $120 to $150 per metre | From around $477 per metre, paid once |
| Goes green or mouldy | Yes, in shade, within months | Only if left unpainted for years; paint prevents it |
| Loses its sheen | Yes, becomes dull and porous | No, the painted finish can be refreshed |
| Needs painting | Eventually, to restore appearance | Repainted every 10 to 15 years, looks brand new again |
| Storm resistance | Brittle, cracks and splits | Survives storms, no rope required |
| Noise reduction | Poor, panels are thin | Solid 50MPa concrete blocks road and neighbour noise |
| Fire resistance | Melts and gives off toxic smoke | Non-combustible |
| Adds property value | Minimal | Yes, a permanent boundary asset |

The maintenance reality
| Task | Vinyl | Concrete (painted) |
|---|---|---|
| Wash down | Frequently, and it still discolours | A hose-off once or twice a year |
| Remove moss or algae | Yes, and it keeps coming back | Rarely, the paint prevents it taking hold |
| Restore faded colour | Not possible, replace or live with it | Repaint any colour you like |
| After storm damage | Often, panels crack and need replacing | Practically never |
Why concrete wins, even with the occasional repaint
- One install, one payment, forever. You will never replace it.
- Paint it any colour, and change the look whenever you like.
- Survives storms, no rope required.
- Solid concrete blocks road and neighbour noise so you can enjoy your yard.

Vinyl vs concrete fencing: common questions
Doesn't vinyl fencing never need maintenance?
That is the brochure promise, but in the Queensland climate vinyl goes green in shaded areas within months, loses its sheen and turns porous within a few years. Many owners end up cleaning it constantly or painting it. A painted concrete wall needs a wash once or twice a year and a repaint roughly every 10 to 15 years, and it looks brand new again each time.
Is vinyl or concrete fencing cheaper?
As a guide, vinyl runs around $120 to $150 per metre installed, while our concrete walls start from around $477 per metre. Concrete costs more up front, but it lasts 50 to 100 years and survives storms, so you only ever pay once. Once you factor in replacement, storm repairs and ongoing cleaning, concrete is the lower lifetime cost for most Brisbane and Gold Coast homes. Every site is different, so the best way to compare is a free quote.
Will a concrete fence go green like vinyl does?
Only if it is left bare for many years. Our walls are painted, and the paint stops moss and algae taking hold. If it ever needs freshening up, you simply wash it down or repaint, you are never stuck with a stained fence you cannot fix.
Why does concrete handle storms better than vinyl?
Vinyl panels are thin and become brittle in UV, so high winds crack and dislodge them. Our walls are solid 50MPa precast concrete on steel-reinforced footings, the same strength class used in major civil works, so they stay put through severe weather.
