How Rendered Wall Fencing Is Done: The Full Process Explained

By Greg·22 May 2026·5 min read

Rendered wall fencing combines the strength of concrete with a smooth, modern finish. Here's how the process works, from panel installation to the final render coat, and why it delivers a premium look that lasts.

Rendered wall fencing is one of the most popular styles we install across Brisbane and the Gold Coast. It combines the raw structural strength of precast concrete with a smooth, painted finish that suits everything from modern estates to classic Queenslanders.

But how is it actually done? Here's the full process from start to finish.

What is rendered fencing?

Rendered fencing starts with solid precast concrete panels. Once installed, the panels receive a render coat, a cementite-based mixture applied to the surface to create a smooth, uniform finish. The render is then sealed and painted in your chosen colour.

The result looks like a high-end masonry wall, but it's installed in a fraction of the time and at a lower cost than traditional brickwork.

Step 1: Precast panel installation

The process starts the same way as any of our concrete fence installations. Steel-reinforced pier footings are drilled and poured along the fence line. Once cured, our 50 MPa precast concrete panels are craned into position and slotted between steel posts. A typical 30-metre fence line can be fully panelled in a single day.

Step 2: Surface preparation

Before rendering, the panel surfaces are cleaned and any joints between panels are filled. A bonding agent is applied to help the render adhere properly to the concrete substrate. This step is critical for long-term durability, as poorly bonded render can crack and peel within a few years.

Step 3: Render application

The render coat is applied by hand in one or two passes, depending on the desired finish thickness. Our renderers use a polymer-modified cement render that's specifically formulated for exterior use in Queensland's climate. It handles UV exposure, rain, and temperature swings without cracking or delaminating.

Common finishes include:

  • Smooth render: a clean, contemporary look popular in modern builds
  • Sand finish: a slightly textured surface that hides minor imperfections
  • Bagged finish: a softer, more traditional look with visible texture variation

Step 4: Curing

The render needs 24 to 48 hours to cure properly. During this time it should be kept damp in hot weather to prevent surface cracking. We schedule render jobs with weather in mind to ensure ideal curing conditions.

Step 5: Sealing and painting

Once cured, the rendered surface is sealed with an exterior-grade sealer and painted. Two coats of acrylic exterior paint are standard. You choose the colour to match your home, and the paint provides an additional layer of UV and weather protection.

Why rendered fencing beats block walls

Traditional rendered block walls require a bricklayer to build courses of concrete blocks, then a renderer to finish them. This takes days and is heavily weather-dependent. With our precast system, the structural panels go up in hours and the render follows within days. You get the same premium finish in less time, with less mess, and with a structurally stronger result thanks to our 50 MPa concrete.

How long does rendered fencing last?

The concrete panels themselves are engineered for a 100-year lifespan. The render coat, when properly applied and maintained, will last 20 to 30 years before needing a repaint. The render itself won't fail because it's mechanically bonded to a stable, non-moving concrete substrate, unlike block walls that can shift and crack at mortar joints.

Cost guide

Rendered wall fencing is typically 15 to 25 percent more than our standard smooth-face panels, depending on fence length and the finish you choose. Given that it eliminates the need for a separate bricklayer and delivers a result that looks like a $50,000 masonry wall, most homeowners find it excellent value.
