Why 50MPa Concrete Makes Our Fences Different

By Greg·1 April 2026·4 min read

Most precast fence panels are made from 25MPa concrete. Ours are 50MPa - twice as strong. Here's why that matters for your fence, and how it's the same strength used to build the Gateway Bridge.

When comparing precast concrete fence panels, one number matters more than almost any other: concrete strength, measured in MPa (megapascals).

Standard precast concrete fence panels in Australia are typically made from 25-32 MPa concrete. It's cheap, it's easy to work with, and for most non-structural applications it's fine. But it's also what allows cracks to form, edges to chip, and surfaces to weather away over decades of sun, rain, and impact.

At Superior Concrete Walls, we use 50 MPa concrete - the same strength specification used in major civil infrastructure projects like the Gateway Bridge in Brisbane. This isn't overkill marketing. It's a fundamental engineering decision.

What does 50 MPa actually mean?

MPa (megapascals) measures compressive strength - how much pressure the concrete can withstand before it fails. 50 MPa concrete can withstand roughly 5,000 tonnes of pressure per square metre before failure. 25 MPa concrete? Half that.

For a fence panel, this translates to real-world durability:

  • Resistance to impact damage (cars, trees, sports equipment)
  • Crack resistance during curing and thermal cycling
  • Better surface finish that lasts decades without spalling
  • Improved performance in salty coastal air

The compound effect over 100 years

Our fence panels are engineered for a 100-year+ lifespan. Over that time, small differences in material quality compound enormously. A 25 MPa fence might look fine for 15-20 years, then start showing cracks, chips, and surface degradation. A 50 MPa fence is still performing structurally the same way it did the day it was installed.

Combined with our stainless steel reinforcement and factory-controlled curing process, the result is a fence that genuinely outlasts the house it surrounds.
